Understanding the Calculation Methods
Our calculator offers four different ways to calculate your pregnancy dates. Choose the method that works best with the information you have:
| Method | What You Need | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Last Menstrual Period (LMP) | First day of your last period | Most common method, used by healthcare providers |
| Conception Date | Date you believe conception occurred | When you know the exact conception date |
| Due Date | Your estimated due date | When your doctor has given you a due date |
| Ultrasound | Ultrasound date and gestational age | Most accurate method, especially if periods are irregular |
The Pregnancy Calculation Formula
Standard Pregnancy Calculation
Due Date = First Day of Last Period + 280 days
Due Date = First Day of Last Period + 40 weeks
This formula is based on Naegele's Rule, developed in the 19th century and still widely used today. It assumes:
- A 28-day menstrual cycle
- Ovulation occurs on day 14
- A 40-week pregnancy duration
Calculation Example
If your last period started on January 1st:
- Due Date: January 1 + 280 days = October 8th
- Conception Date: Around January 14th (assuming day 14 ovulation)
- Current Week: Based on today's date from January 1st

Step-by-Step Guide to Using the Calculator
Step 1: Choose Your Calculation Method
Select the method that matches the information you have:
- Last Period: Use if you know the first day of your last menstrual period
- Conception Date: Use if you know when conception occurred
- Due Date: Use if your doctor has given you a due date
- Ultrasound: Use if you have ultrasound measurements
Pro Tip: Last Period Method
The Last Period method is the most commonly used and accepted by healthcare providers. If you're unsure which method to use, start with this one.
Step 2: Enter Your Cycle Information
Provide your average cycle length for more accurate calculations:
- Standard cycle: 28 days (most common)
- Short cycle: 21-27 days
- Long cycle: 29-35 days
Important Note
If your cycles are irregular, the Ultrasound method will provide the most accurate results. Always consult with your healthcare provider for the most precise dating.
Step 3: Review Your Results
After clicking "Calculate," you'll see several key pieces of information:
- Due Date: Your estimated delivery date
- Current Week: How far along you are
- Conception Date: When conception likely occurred
- Trimester: Which trimester you're in
- Baby Stats: Current size and development information
Understanding Your Results
Due Date Accuracy
It's important to understand that due dates are estimates, not deadlines:
- Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date
- Most babies are born within two weeks before or after their due date
- Your healthcare provider may adjust your due date based on ultrasound measurements
Trimester Breakdown
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters:
- First Trimester: Weeks 1-13 (months 1-3)
- Second Trimester: Weeks 14-27 (months 4-6)
- Third Trimester: Weeks 28-40+ (months 7-9)
Baby Development Example
At 20 weeks, your baby is approximately:
- Length: 6.5 inches (about the size of a banana)
- Weight: 10.6 ounces
- Development: You may start feeling movement, and the baby can hear sounds
