Calculation Methods Explained
| Method | What You Need | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Last Menstrual Period | First day of your last period | Most common method, used by healthcare providers |
| Conception Date | Date you believe conception occurred | When you know the exact conception date |
| Due Date | Your estimated due date | When your doctor has given you a due date |
| Ultrasound | Ultrasound date and gestational age | Most accurate method, especially for irregular cycles |
The Science Behind the Calculations
Naegele's Rule
Due Date = First Day of LMP + 280 days (40 weeks)
This assumes a 28-day cycle with ovulation on day 14.
Cycle Length Adjustment
For cycles longer or shorter than 28 days:
Adjusted Due Date = Standard Due Date + (Cycle Length - 28) days
Example
If your LMP was January 1 and you have a 30-day cycle:
- Standard Due Date: October 8
- Adjusted Due Date: October 10 (+2 days for 30-day cycle)
Worked Example
LMP Calculation Example
If your last period started on January 1st with a 28-day cycle:
- Due Date: January 1 + 280 days = October 8th
- Conception Date: Around January 14th (day 14 ovulation)
- Current Week: Calculated from January 1st to today
At 20 weeks, your baby is approximately the size of a banana (6.5 inches, 10.6 ounces).
Understanding Your Results
Due Date
Your estimated delivery date. Only about 5% of babies are born on their exact due date — most arrive within two weeks before or after.
Current Week
How far along you are in your pregnancy, calculated from your LMP. This is your gestational age.
Trimester
Pregnancy is divided into three trimesters:
- First Trimester: Weeks 1-13
- Second Trimester: Weeks 14-27
- Third Trimester: Weeks 28-40+
Conception Ranges
Shows the most probable dates for conception and intercourse based on ovulation timing and sperm survival.
Baby Development Milestones
- Week 4: Pregnancy test may show positive (poppy seed size)
- Week 8: Heartbeat detectable (raspberry size)
- Week 12: End of first trimester (lime size)
- Week 18: Baby movements noticeable
- Week 20: Anatomy scan, gender reveal possible (banana size)
- Week 28: Third trimester begins (eggplant size)
- Week 40: Due Date (pumpkin size)
Every Baby is Unique
These milestones are general guidelines. Every baby develops at their own pace. Always consult your healthcare provider for personalized information.
